DIY Bear Rug

Myself and the wee one, Elizabeth Graeber, beneath the watchful eye of momma Jenn, made our very own BEAR RUG. We've only been talking about this for like MONTHS. It might be slightly offensive to those EPA and Greenpeace people to design a rug made from the skin of the endangered Polar Bear, but you know what? It's not a real Polar Bear, so back off.

All you need is a large piece of white canvass or fabric (something heavy, like denim), a pencil, gesso, assorted acrylic paints (black, white, blue and yellow), brushes, and varnish.

First apply a thick, even coat of the gesso directly on the fabric. After letting that dry (you can use a hairdryer if you don't feel like waiting), loosely sketch the outline of your bear and some details for the face. Apply the paint to give your bear life! Let dry for a bit, then apply the varnish (either outside or near an open window). The next day, cut around the edges are you are DONE. If you have time, i would do some sort of edging so it doesn't fray. So easy, dudes.

DUDES, the first Bored of Trade was a total success. Cozy, warm atmosphere with lots of high fives and hugs. I recieved so much positive feedback that my cheeks are still blushing. I will be having this way more frequently than i had originally thought (will you guys be around late June?)

"Sorry about your wall" it read, in nice, precise handwriting. It has since been painted over, and upon some further inspection and research, i wonder...

...do you think it could have been Mike Mills (probably not, but WHAT IF)? Check out this documentation exhibit of his graffiti:

Mills is an artist/filmmaker (including Thumbsucker back in 2005 and a boatload of genuinely interesting documentaries). He has directed music videos for the likes of Yoko Ono, Air, Blonde Readhead, cover art for Sonic Youth, Air, etc. His most interesting/extensive/recent project is "Humans", which embraces art, fashion, relationships, and culture. Hello all! I have 2 new musics that i would like to share. Both of these are new releases that were out this week... yesterday, actually.

The first FIRST is the new Black Lips album, 200 Million Thousand. to be honest, I downloaded it at work just now and haven't been able to REALLY give it a solid listen, but from what i can barely hear (no headphones fail) It sounds like they MIGHT be growing up a wee bit. Bored of Trade

For the past month or so, I've been planning this EVENT THING. It's called Bored of Trade, the title concieved not at the power strategy meeting over coffee as planned, but later that night. It's something I am planning to throw 3 or 4 times a year, hopefully finding a solid group of really amazing, top quality vendors to permanently join this retail collective. Long term goals include SAVING MONEY and molding this wee collective into an actual store.

There is an amazing artist that will be involved in future Bored of Trade events, Victor Aguilar (the right brain behind the flyer). He has been such a help and can't wait to see what his own art collective, Taupe, creates to sell. Also on board are some fellow etsy-ers. Jenn of Jules & Juniper re-purposes vintage jewlery. She is currently extending her knowledge of metal craft at the Corcoran. Meagan of Sister Sadie brings her experience working at Junction on U Street to show us a great collection of vintage. Kristin of FeatherBrain, a new etsy friend, creates beautiful feathered headwear. Chandi of Manatea Party brings her keen eye and her sense of humor to her home decor and her collection of vintage clothes. Tim of Dynamite Printworks is a Mount Pleasant and Columbia Heights community staple. His silk screens bleed local love.

I have a good feeling in my little heart that this is going to be a pretty great event. With the growing attendee list, however, my basement is beginning to look increasingly small.

Today through February 21, you can buy Stefano Pilati's first unisex collection for Yves Saint Laurent at a special pop-up shop in New York. The suits are inspired by YSL's iconic Le Smoking tux of the sixties. The line also includes high-waisted shorts, trenches, and cardigans. Also showcased in the collection are -cargo pants- (basically)... and i am just not ready for that again.

I'm not sure HOW unisex this line is, it seems more marketed to the androgynously stlye-minded woman than both sexes equally, and even though i am loving some of these looks - most are just downright unflattering. I would really like to have these photographed on MEN. Here are my picks:

DIY Feather Necklace

All you need is a couple packages of feathers from the craft store, some wooden beads (also found pre-packaged in craft stores), some hefty string (leather is great), scissors, a very sharp point and an hour or two. Arrange feathers as needed and cut them to appropriate lengths. Poke holes in them about 1/2 an inch from the top (this may need some extra elbow grease - i had to lightly use a hammer and a needle to make a hole on a few) then string the beads and the feathers together, tie off and you are DUNZO.

This is a cell phone image captured on 14th and U last night. There was no where else
I'd rather be then right there. Everyone EVERYONE pouring on the streets, strangers hugging strangers, people sobbing in relief, jumping on lamposts, bus stops and stop lights screaming at
the top of their lungs. People in groups of 5 or 6 running down the street carring a huge
american flag. That was the best part of the whole night. Sure, people were
cheering for Obama. But they were also, FIANLLY, cheering for the
very country they live in.
I am finally proud to live here.

Drink Up Buttercup

Last Friday night at Iota we gleefully welcomed Middle Distance Runner back from their extended hiatus. It was a pretty cozy evening. Having New Rock Church of Fire on the bill guaranteed that friendship, old acquaintances and hugs would be in abundance. The outcome of having a fun night was inevitable, but there was one huge surprise.

The out-of-towners opening for both local bands weren't your run-of-the-mill filler act. They were GREAT. Drink Up Buttercup is a quartet from Philadelphia who's major influences, according to them, include "artificial orange flavoring, conical shaped party hats, disguise able sized alcohol containers, the gratuitous use of markers, the sound of something wood hitting something steel, plastic, porcelain, paper based, skin related, and or something else wooden, yard sales + the mere termites of life." Their sound is a whimsical mix of Animal Collective, A Band of Bees, the Beatles , and at times even remind me a bit of local DC favorites, Greenland. Blend all of these together, drink some whiskey and eat some mushrooms while walking through a carnival fun house (not recomended) and you've got Drink Up Buttercup.

These boys will not only be performing at CMJ this year, but will be in DC on November 1st at the Black Cat with Bishop Allen. I highly recommend checking these gents out.

New Kids- Recap

It's 6pm the evening of the New Kids show in DC. You are sitting down drinking a Stella when you feel the ground start to shake. Ripples form in your beer from the vibrations, just like Jurassic Park. You glance up and see the horizon growing imminently closer. "What is that?" That, my friend, was the stampede of late-twenties women, spreading themselves around Chinatown like greedy cockroaches, most of them adorning I Heart Joey and NKOTB baby tees, screaming at the top of their lungs.

I was one of them. (minus the baby tee)

We made it up to our suite quickly, as we were running a bit late and didn't want to miss anything. Luckily, Natasha Something-or-Other opened the show. I recognized some of her songs, but could not have cared any less. After a brief intermission, the lights dimmed and everyone lost it. All audience members became a character of their 11 year-old selves. NKOTB played only a couple of new songs *thank god* and loaded up their set with material that they KNEW would make us cry tears of joy and a pretty amazing wardrobe change into matching white suits. It was the best time everrrrr. At one point, I broke out of the suite and tried to pump up the crowd. People weren't really interested.

When everything was said and done, we had made our way to the 6th street side of theVerizon Center where there was a huge crowd waiting to catch a glimpse of their tour bus. This one chick tried to tell me that Donnie kissed her on the lips (big fat liar) and after that, well, I just can't remember much.

I was planning on actually critiquing the show in some sort of organized manner, but we thought it would be a good idea to do a couple rounds of shots after drinking some pints before the show, leaving me in a state of utter bliss and completely incapable of paying attention to much of anything. We are already a few days in and I have been too dang busy to warn you about the presence of DC SONIC CIRCUITS.

The Sonic Circuits Festival of Experimental Music was initiated by the American Composers Forum (ACF) to provide DC’s music and art communities with the opportunity to sample experimental and avant-garde electronic music, with an emphasis on improvisation and artistic use of new technologies.

Now heading into its eighth year, the Washington DC chapter of the ACF has expanded the scope of the festival to include electroacoustic compositions, experimental jazz, noise rock, electronic drone and experimental folk, as well as live video and film programs.

Sonic Circuits seeks to foster the spirit of collaboration through the diversity of participating artists, and its varied programming appeals to arts enthusiasts of all types.

The festival is scheduled to take place September 28 - October 5, 2008 at the Velvet Lounge, National Museum of Women in the Arts, George Washington University in Washington DC, & Pyramid Atlantic in downtown Silver Spring.

Raveonettes New Remix EP Release

Following the success of this year's album Lust Lust Lust, The Raveonettes announce plans to release a series of digital only EPs on Vice Music. The group is dropping a series of four short form releases over the course of the next three months, leading off with a free remix EP today. Though known primarily for their signature blend of lush melodies and over-the-top guitar noise, the EPs show off new creative angles of the group. Following today's remix EP will be Sometimes They Drop By on September 23. Two more EPs will follow on October 21 and November 25, the first further twisting the familiar Raveonettes' sound, and the last being an EP of Christmas songs. Today's free Remixed EP centers around three standout tracks from Lust Lust Lust, presented in new versions. Hypnotic Japanese electro producer 80KIDZ, Alec Empire-conspirator Nic Endo, and Danish DJ Trentmøeller reconstruct these now familiar songs into new shapes.

You Lose

Everyone loses. Everyone EXCEPT those proud few at the Velvet Lounge Ear Pwr show.

They were the cutest things I have ever seen. One with a huge red afro, cut-off shorts and a blowhorn, the other a tiny platinum blonde with sunglasses and awesome dance moves. They were set up on the floor which allowed hugs to be given out to audience members more easily. Their song are mostly about pretty normal stuff, like waterparks and airplanes, with the words "cowabunga" and "ice cold" thrown in for good measure. Their sound was INCREDIBLY infectious, mixing serious synth beats with loud talking, and even had the stiffest DC crowd moving (well, more than usual. but seriously, whats up with that, dc!? shake whatcho momma gave ya, for once!). Basically, all of you totally messed up. You should have been there. NEXT TIME.

Tim is a local community arts activist and an all around good dude. Up until this year (under the label "Dynamite Printworks"), Tim adorned otherwise bland electrical boxes, trash bins and sign posts with beautifully silkscreened posters for local bands that could be seen all over the heights and mt. pleasant. After an extended stay in Mexico with his fiance working with local Oaxacan kids and teens to make their world a more colorful place, Tim came back to the city and taught a mural painting class at a local arts center. The kids initially took photographs of the faces of their own NW neighborhood, asking "what does Columbia Heights mean to you?", then selected a few of the best and painted them onto a wall outside Harriet Tubman elementary school on Park Rd. If you are ever walking to Wonderland or Red Rocks, please feel free to admire the work done by his class:

Bodies of Water, Black Cat show on Sunday

I had almost forgotten. It was 6:30pm when I looked at my calendar. Bodies of Water at Black Cat backstage! After waking myself up and hauling butt down to 14th street, I got there in time to see the opening act, Port O'Brien. Perhaps it was the fact that it was Sunday, or I that my brain was still foggy from all that sleeping, but they didn't really do it for me. The lead singer was charming, but I wasn't really sure what sound they were going for. It was always teetering on the edge of sounding like boring generic california indie. If it wasn't for the banjo, there would have been no hope (which, by the way, you could never really hear).

Speaking of snooze-town USA... what was up with Bodies of Water? They opened up with "It Moves" and went right into two really upbeat songs from their old album, then back into their new stuff for the rest of the night, which to be honest, is really really boring. I hate to say it, but its true! One of the things that I loved about them was their energy and their crazy yelling. All I got was lazy keyboards and soft droaning voices. I did appreciate the new girl guitarist/violinist/singer, even if she just kind of stood there the whole time. Listen Bodies of Water, I am sure you were tired and it was Sunday, but that is exactly why you should have amped it up a bit. Maybe THEN you wouldn't have been left with 5 people at your show. I also left, which I felt a little guilty about, but I was falling asleep. (Don't worry, I still love them)

Squash Blossoms

There is a new culinary trend sweeping the nation, catching the curiosity of chefs and foodies alike; using squash blossoms to prepare light summer treats and to garnish main courses. These edible flowers are an age-old favorite in Italy and India, but have recently gained a lot of hype in the US.

Much to my surprise and delight, there were boxes of 6 or 7 for $2 lined up at the Mt. Pleasant Farmers Market this past weekend, along with a printout of some very helpful hints on how they should be prepared. After doing a bit more reserch on the INTERWEBS, I found two different tempting recipes; fried squash blossoms stuffed with fresh mozzerella and basil (i used sweet thai basil from the market), and a light butter sauce to toss with fettuchini pasta.

The Recipes:

GARDEN SQUASH AND
BLOSSOM BUTTER
PASTA

4 blossoms
1 shallot, diced small
1 t. each finely chopped fresh savory and thyme
2 t. finely chopped Italian parsley (i used basil instead... i would have also added garlic... next time!)
4 T. sweet butter, softened (set and extra 2 T aside to saute the squash)
Salt and pepper
about a cup of chopped squash and eggplant
1/2 cup chicken stock
Fettuchini

Separate blossoms from stems and chop the flowers. Blend flowers, shallots and herbs together with butter and season with salt and pepper. Slice squash and eggplant into thin rounds.

Gently saute squash and eggplant alone in butter for 2 to 3 minutes. Add chicken stock and squash blossoms and simmer while you cook the pasta. Drain pasta and toss with the sauce. Season and mix well.

STUFFED SQUASH BLOSSOMS

This is a very simple recipe. All you need is 2 eggs, corn meal or flour, salt and pepper, fresh mozzerella and basil (You can also stuff with an array of other ingrediants). Stuff the blossom with enough ingredients to wrap the petals completely around, dip in egg and dredge through the corn meal (you can season the corn meal with salt and pepper). fry in olive oil on medium heat until the outside is crispy and the cheese begins to burst out of the fried blossom. Serve hot! (there should probably be some more seasoning, need to experiment a little with that... garlic?)

DIY Fancy Headwear

Last weekend I attended a colonial themed going-away shindig for the lovely miss Emily Kirkpatrick. She needed a party favor that wasn't a tricorner hat or an awful wig, something that screamed feminine "colonial chic" (bahaha), and also something BIG enough to make her stand out from the crowd. I found a cloth headband at target, some fake flowers and feather at my local craft store (i added a fake bird later - wish i had taken a photo) and used some yarn that I already had at home. I simply cut the flowers at the length I wanted and wrapped the yarn around and around (and around) until the whole headband was covered and each flower was firmly in place. If you are going to use your headband more than a couple times, I would reccomend some fabric or hot glue action so everything is completely secure. Aaannnnd voila!:

The whole thing took about 30 minutes. So quick and so easy!

Bodies of Water

A band that has recently been playing in my house ON REPEAT for the last few months is the questionably glorious and extravagant Bodies of Water out of Los Angeles. Just last week they released their second album, A Certain Feeling on Secretly Canadian (label mates including Jens Lekman, Foreign Born and The War on Drugs). Their full and over-the-top sound falls somewhere between the Polyphonic Spree and the grade school chorus of your choice. Each song has its own life, beginning middle and end stages you can tell they put everything into. If you have heard them before and felt a little taken aback, listen to a few key songs, turn off the AC, roll the windows down in your car, and pretend you are driving through Antelope Canyon in your beat up pick up with only your dog, a jug of water, and your own emotional turmoil to keep you company. Life is good.

The Beautiful and Scenic Laurel, MD

Sike. Laurel had to have been the worst "Historic District" i have ever been to. The stores were all closed at 4:00 on a saturday. This ended up not really making a difference to Liz and myself. We would have been pissed if we needed fax machines from 1997, vaccums or a travel agent, these stores essentially being the only types of retail on Main street. There was also a meat store? With a huge plastic cow and chicken out front? We ate lunch at this cute pizza place at the top of Main Street, which would have been pleasant if there wasn't a drunk guy slouched in the booth directly next to us staring, mouth agape, at liz, while the autistic kid sitting too close to the television and yelling everything the announcer was saying (just in case we couldn't hear) was staring at me and clapping. I can safely say that it was the single most awkward lunch I have ever experienced.

It wouldn't have been worth the trip had i not found amazing clothes. These will be going on etsy as soon as i get them photographed on one of my lovely models.
